How many times have you looked at something and wondered, "is there any other use for that?" Or, better yet, how many times have you been trying to create something...to improve something...and you are searching and searching for something to help and Bingo! There it is!
This is the basis for a children's book called The Waffle Story (by Natalie Kerrigan and illustrated by Ray Shilling). It was inspired by the late Bill Bowerman, co-founder of Nike: he created the waffle sole using the waffle iron from his kitchen! The book is told from Wendy the Waffle Iron's perspective.
The "story behind the story" is interesting, as well. To quote from the The Waffle Story website:
This book proves that when the timing is right the right things happen! In November of 2009, 6 years afters after Natalie created the initial draft of this story, her path finally crossed with Ray Shilling, the illustrator of this book, when Ray submitted an illustration of Phil Knight for a side project that Natalie was leading. Ray pushed for the initial meeting to happen sooner rather than later which allowed the book to be developed to a point where it could be shared with Barbara Bowerman just months before she passed away at age 96. (Barbara Bowerman was Bill Bowerman's widow.)
Although both Ray and Natalie are Nike Employees, they did this project on their own time and their own dime...that's how much they believed in it!
